From the history of the Brno International Music Festival [MHFB]


1924
Festival of Janáček chamber music in Brno.

1938
Festival cancelled due to unfavourable political conditions.

1948
First plans to make the festival a regular event, further inspired by the founding of the Prague Spring festival: the Janáček Festival is founded; extensive Janáček exhibit presented on the 20th anniversary of his death.

1955
Founding of regular annual multi-thematic springtime festival under the overall title of Brno Music May (until 1965).

1958
Janáček Festival held with parallel international conference "Leoš Janáček and contemporary music"

1966
Founding of Brno International Music Festival - a new type of festival that would now be strictly defined by theme; includes opera performances and regular musicology colloquies. Positive reaction the first year of festival is strong and immediate.

1967
Festival includes newly-founded competition Prix musical de radio Brno for best recording. Second annual festival also very well received by critics and audience alike.

1987
First annual Exposition of New Music (member of the European Conference of New Music Promoters) - festival held over several days in conjunction with MHFB.

1993
Beginning in this year, the Brno International Music Festival is permanently moved to the end of September/beginning of October, with the subtitle Moravian Autumn.

1994
The festival becomes a permanent institution with professional management by concert agency ARS/KONCERT, a member of the European Association of Concert Agencies. The Brno festival becomes a member of the prestigious European Association of Festivals in Geneva, and a member of the Czech Republic Association of Music Festivals.

1995
A new music festival is founded under the auspices of the MHFB - the Easter Festival of Sacred Music.

1996
Under the MHFB Moravian Autumn, the 1st annual International Interpretation Competition for Young Musicians is held. Its five-year cycle features in turn French horn, organ, contrabass, percussion, and tuba.

2001
The Festival Exposition of New Music was held independently (in May) for the first time, inside the main hall of the former Vaňkovka factory.
