39th Brno International Music Festival
MORAVIAN AUTUMN
22. 9. – 9. 10. 2004
on the theme
"JANÁČEK, DVOŘÁK"
Terra, unde orimur
The theme of this year’s thirty-nine annual Moravian Autumn is “The Land We Come From”, commemorating several special anniversaries in 2004, in particular the centennial of Antonín Dvořák’s death, and the sesquicentennial (150 years) of the birth of Leoš Janáček. As befits the occasion, this year’s festival offers some truly top-rank soloists, ensembles, and orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic under Nicolaus Harnoncourt, or the Czech Philharmonic with its new chief conductor Zdeněk Mácal, a Brno native. This year’s program revolves around Dvořák and Janáček, or rather the interrelationship of their music as it reflects the ties between Bohemia and Moravia: though linked in a thousand ways, yet the music of both masters is immediately distinguishable. And while each composer is wholly unique in his own way, works of both men have proven accessible to a broad world audience.
