Brno International Music Festival
EASTER FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC
15 th year
April 9 – 23, 2006
Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedrale
For this years fifteenth annual Easter Festival of Sacred Music, six concerts during the weeks before and after Easter Sunday (9 to 23 April) will be held at Brnos Petrov Cathedral. In keeping with the spirit of Easter worship, the three concerts in the week before Good Friday will have a Passion theme; the other three will be joyful. All of the concerts will have an overarching stylistic theme. The festival traditionally opens with the Stabat Mater, this year in the Romantic visions of Franz Schubert and Giuseppe Verdi. The second evening belongs to Jan Dismas Zelenka, the foremost Czech composer of High Baroque. Another concert will feature the Renaissance in English, Italian, and Central European music. Vienna classicism is represented in this Mozart anniversary year by two full evening concerts of the masters sacred works. This fall, for the first time in festival history, contemporary music is on the program, in the form of improvisation by creative interpreters: organist Jaroslav Tůma will expound upon the individual movements of Zelenkas Good Friday Responsories, flutist Jiří Stivín on vocal works of the Renaissance masters.
Traditionally, the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno is charged with the choral elements of the festivals repertoire: this year they will appear in three different concerts. As always, the festival will present several top soloists. Special guests include the Kühn Mixed Choir conducted by Jan Rozehnal; and, for two concerts, the famous boys choir Boni pueri from the town of Hradec Kralové. Providing the instrumental element (besides the above-mentioned soloists, and a four-member ensemble of period instruments) are two chamber orchestras (the Czech Chamber Soloists, and the Chamber Philharmonic of Pardubice), and two symphony orchestras (the North Bohemia Philharmonic under the baton of its chief conductor Charles Olivieri Munroe, and the Brno Philharmonic with its conductor-in-chief Petr Altrichter).
